Information on Fees & Insurance for Mental Health Services

We are Mindful About Your Costs for Services

We understand that therapy can seem expensive. Our commitment to our clients is that our fees for service reflect our need to cover basic operational costs as well as the quality and expertise of our therapists.

A Lifelong Investment, But Not a Lifelong Commitment

Breakwater approaches therapy as an important and robust investment in yourself. Like any sound investment, it is important for you to see returns on your time, effort, and money as quickly as possible. While therapy can look different for every person, the majority of people do not need (or want) “open-ended” therapy. Our therapists understand that it should not require an open-ended relationship to achieve or maintain your goals.

In fact, some research suggests that committing to a limited number of sessions can actually result in more efficient therapeutic progress! Generally speaking, the vast majority of our clients achieve the progress they seek in about 8-24 sessions depending on the complexity of their concerns. Our therapists are highly trained professionals who will assess, plan, and address your goals within these timeframes whenever possible.  This is also why, whenever relevant, we offer supplemental resources and education that can help you achieve and sustain your goals independently.

Also, it is completely normal to “jump in and out” of therapy.  Come in when we can help, and take a break when you feel you’ve got a handle on things.  We maintain an open-door policy for all clients who receive our services, with a mission to empower and support you in self-management as much as possible. We also often find that clients who return for additional therapy after successfully terminating–even for a different reason–tend to more quickly achieve their goals because they are able to build off their previous progress and skills.

Good Faith Estimates

Consistent with the No Surprises Act implemented in 2022, we are willing to provide you with a good faith estimate of your total costs upon request. Given our current rates and the typical length of therapy, most clients who cover all expenses out of pocket pay between $1500-$2200 in total. Your provider will be able to provide you with a more specific estimate to your situation after your initial evaluation and treatment planning.

Sliding Scale/Reduced Fees

Breakwater reserves a limited number of spots for each therapist to provide services at reduced fees for qualifying clients.  As a general rule, we reduce our rates for individuals or households with low or no income. If you would like to know more about this option, you can talk to our intake coordinator during your free 15-minute consult, or with your provider if you are an established client.

Insurance Policies

Breakwater Psychotherapy currently accepts the following insurance plans:

  • Aetna

  • Florida Blue

  • United Healthcare

  • Cigna

  • Oxford

  • Oscar Health

Your coverage and share of payment will depend on your individual plan. Breakwater Psychotherapy partners with Headway.co to verify insurance benefits and to ensure coverage for services. Your provider will explain this arrangement, how your health information is shared, and how to use your insurance to pay for services during your free consultation.

Health Savings Account (HSAs) and Superbills

Breakwater is willing and able to receive payments from HSAs. If you have an HSA, simply provide your card information as part of your intake and all fees will be charged to that account.

Also, upon request, we can create “superbills” that you can submit to your insurance company if your plan allows for coverage or partial coverage of out-of-network mental health services.

Why Forego Insurance for Therapy Services?

Some clients are hesitant to pay for psychotherapy services out of pocket. Given the differences between typical copays and fee-for-service rates, we understand!  However, we also recognize there are potential benefits to paying out of pocket.

  • Paying directly for mental health services ensures your health information remains as private as possible.  Insurance companies require providers to disclose certain details about your treatment, which become part of your health record. Insurance companies use this data to determine the duration, frequency, and method of treatment they will cover.  This can result in a limited number of sessions, or only certain kinds of therapy being covered.

  • Submitting payments to insurance companies also requires your therapist to diagnose you with an illness or disorder. Insurance will only cover the cost of services to the extent that they determine is “medically necessary,” in accordance with their standards and calculations. Even though insurance companies are required to keep this information confidential and secure, paying out of pocket opts you out of this whole system and can allow for more flexibility, personal control, and privacy in your services.

  • Paying a fee for service allows your provider increased flexibility in treating you.  Without the limitations of insurance-imposed criteria for treatment and information exchange, your provider is better able to tailor mental health care services to your specific needs, and be more available to you in that process.
